Wooden furniture is a long-term investment — but the UAE’s unique climate can shorten its life significantly if you don’t take the right precautions. Dubai’s outdoor heat, indoor air conditioning, and coastal humidity create a cycle of expansion and contraction in wood fibres that causes cracking, warping, and fading over time. Here is exactly how to prevent that.
1. Keep Wood Away from Direct Sunlight
The UAE sun is brutal. Direct sunlight through windows causes wood to fade, dry out, and crack — sometimes within months. Position wooden furniture away from windows or use UV-filtering curtains and blinds.
2. Manage the Air Conditioning
Air conditioning is the hidden enemy of wooden furniture in Dubai. AC strips moisture from indoor air, creating an extremely dry environment that causes wood to shrink and crack. Two things help:
- Use a humidifier in rooms with valuable wooden furniture. Aim for 40–60% relative humidity indoors.
- Keep AC vents directed away from wooden pieces. Constant direct airflow accelerates drying.
3. Polish and Oil Regularly
Wood needs moisture to stay supple. Polish or oil your wooden furniture every 3–6 months to replenish the natural oils that dry out in UAE conditions:
- Teak furniture: Apply teak oil once a year.
- Sheesham furniture: Use a quality furniture polish or beeswax every 6 months.
- Mango wood: Apply a wood wax or hard wax oil every 3–6 months.
4. Clean Spills Immediately
Use coasters, placemats, and tablecloths on wooden dining tables. When spills happen, wipe them immediately with a soft dry cloth. Standing water is the fastest way to cause water rings, staining, and swelling in wood fibres.
5. Dust Regularly with the Right Cloth
In Dubai, dust accumulates fast. Dust your wooden furniture at least weekly using a soft, slightly damp microfibre cloth — never a dry duster (which can scratch) or a rough cloth. Wipe in the direction of the grain.
6. Check for Wobble and Tighten Joints
The expansion-contraction cycle in UAE climate can loosen furniture joints over time. Check dining chairs, bed frames, and table legs every 6–12 months. A small amount of wood glue and a clamp overnight usually fixes a loose joint before it becomes a structural problem.
Quick UAE Furniture Care Calendar
- Weekly: Dust with damp microfibre cloth
- Monthly: Check for sun exposure and reposition if needed
- Every 6 months: Polish or oil all wooden surfaces
- Annually: Check and tighten all furniture joints
